Solar shades down across a bayfront high-rise, the skyline still readable straight through the weave.

Grey roller shades layered under sheer drapery, so the room goes from open view to full privacy without changing the look.

Ivory roller shades across a vaulted waterfront wall, sized so the gable glass above stays open to the sky.

Zebra shades on a wide living room window, alternating sheer and solid bands to tune the light by the hour.

White roller shades held at half drop over sliding doors, cutting the low sun off the seating without closing out the garden.

Solar shades on an oceanfront wall, dropped to the sill line so the horizon stays in view from the table.

Cream solar shades part-drawn on a corner unit, holding the ocean and skyline while taking the heat off the glass.

What to get right 01
Four decisions decide whether you like them in a year.
Roller shades go wrong in predictable ways, and every one of them is decided before anything is ordered. This is what your consultant is actually working out at the measure.

-
01
Openness against orientation
A 5% fabric on north glass is a waste of a view. The same fabric on a west wall at 4pm is not enough. Openness gets chosen per elevation, not per house.
-
02
Inside or outside mount
An inside mount looks cleaner and shows the frame. An outside mount kills the light gap at the edges. On a bedroom you almost always want the second one.
-
03
Cassette or exposed roll
A cassette or fascia hides the tube and the fabric roll, which is what makes a bank of shades read as architecture instead of hardware.
-
04
Regular roll or reverse roll
Regular roll drops the cloth behind the tube and hides the roll from inside. Reverse roll drops it in front, which is what clears a deep sill, a handle or a crank without the fabric fouling on it.

The fabric is the whole decision.
A roller shade is a simple machine. What changes the room is the cloth you put on it. Choose a level to see what each one leaves behind.
Sheer, 10% openness and up
The most open weave we hang. It takes the sting out of direct sun and softens the room without really shading it. Right where the view is the reason you bought the place.

Very happy with my blackout roller shades. It gave our office the modern look for our windows we were looking for

The fine points
Roller shade questions.
01What openness should I choose?
02Are zebra shades worth it?
03Can one shade cover a very wide window?
04Will a blackout shade really make the room dark?
05How do you clean them?
06How long do they take?
07What if a shade fails later?

Samples look different in a showroom than they do on your glass at four in the afternoon. That is the entire reason the estimate happens at your place.
