What to get right 03

Cheap drapery gives itself away in the details.

You can tell a well-made panel from across the room without knowing why. It is these four things, and every one of them is decided before the fabric is cut.

  1. 01

    Fullness

A panel needs roughly two to two and a half times the width it covers to hang in proper folds. Skimp on fullness and the drape looks flat and rented no matter what the fabric cost.

  2. 02

    Where the rod goes

Mounting close to the ceiling and wider than the opening makes the window read taller and wider, and lets the panels stack off the glass so you do not lose the view.

  3. 03

    The heading

Ripplefold gives an even modern wave and stacks tight. Pinch pleat is more traditional and more structured. The heading sets the whole character before you pick a colour.

  4. 04

    The track

A motorized or hand-drawn track carries the weight and decides how quietly it moves. On a wide span this matters more than the fabric does.

Sheer, lined, or both at once.

Most of the drapery we hang in South Florida is two layers on one track: a sheer for the day, something heavier for the night. Choose a setting to see what each layer is for.

01

Sheer

Movement and softness with almost no light lost. It hides the hard line of the window frame, blurs what is on the other side of the glass, and makes a big flat wall of glazing feel like a room.

The fine points

Drapery questions.

01Ripplefold or pinch pleat?
Ripplefold gives an even, continuous wave, stacks tighter off the glass and reads modern, which suits most South Florida interiors. Pinch pleat is more structured and more traditional. We will show you both in your fabric before you choose.
02How high should the rod go?
Usually as close to the ceiling as the structure allows, and wider than the window on both sides. It makes the room feel taller, and it lets the panels stack off the glass instead of covering the view you are paying to keep.
03Can drapery go over shades I already have?
Yes, and it is one of the most common things we do. The shade handles heat, glare and privacy, the drapery handles softness and the finished look. We just need enough projection on the hardware to clear the existing headrail.
04Do motorized tracks make noise?
A quality track is quiet enough that you notice the movement before the sound. Cheap track is not. On a bedroom or a media room the track is worth spending on, because it is the part you hear every day.
05Will the sun destroy the fabric?
Unlined fabric in direct South Florida sun will fade eventually. That is exactly what lining is for, and it is why we ask which way the glass faces before recommending a face fabric.
06How long does custom drapery take?
Longer than a stock roller shade, because it is cut and sewn to your measurements. Your consultant gives you a real date at the estimate. If part of the house needs covering sooner, we will often hang shades first and follow with the drapery.
07Can you match a fabric I already have?
Bring us a sample or a photo. If the exact fabric is still made we will order it, and if it is not we will put the closest current options next to yours in your own light so you can judge the match yourself.
